Our Mission

GCLI Students and Faculty during one of GCLI's Workshop Trainings

The Gestalt Center of Long Island, established in 1977, is a non-profit educational institution provisionally chartered by the Board of Regents, State of New York Education Department. The primary purpose of the Center is to offer a high quality program of training in Gestalt Psychotherapy to mental health professionals and to provide educational programs for the general community. In addition, we  are recognized by NYS Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #0044, and by the NYS Education Department’s State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed mental health practitioners #MHC-0001, and licensed marriage and family therapists #MFT-0039. (Effective April 11, 2017 we are no longer offering NBCC continuing education credits). The Center’s faculty have post-graduate training in Gestalt Psychotherapy and have extensive experience as Gestalt psychotherapists in private practice and clinical settings. Adjunct faculty who have expertise in approaches complementary to Gestalt Psychotherapy add breadth to the training experience!

Gestalt therapy is a holistic approach to understanding and working with individuals developed by Frederick Perls, M.D., with significant contributions from Laura Perls, DSc. and Paul Goodman. It is an experiential, rather than interpretive therapy that values and attends to the interplay and integration of body, mind and emotions as they occur in the present moment. The goal of Gestalt Therapy becomes not only the resolution of emotional problems but also excitement and growth in the human personality.

Education

Our courses and training provide the opportunity to observe, experience and practice Gestalt Psychotherapy under the supervision of training staff. They serve to integrate training and method and allows trainees to translate theoretical course work into practice.

Experience

Through intensive retreats, one-on-one personal psychotherapy, hands-on supervised sessions, and more, you will gain the experience to use Gestalt therapy to tackle difficult diagnoses such as post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, eating disorders, and more.

Expertise

Since receiving a New York State Board of Regents provisional charter in 1979, the Gestalt Center of Long Island is authorized to grant Certificates of Completion to trainees who complete the 3 Level Certificate Training Program. New York State recognizes all GCLI graduates as certified Gestalt Therapists.
